Import Restrictions

Senders should determine import restrictions from the country's authorities before posting:

  • cotton seeds
  • drugs and medicines
  • films
  • plants and grain
  • saccharine and similar products.

An import permit is required for all commercial goods. Before posting any item, senders should confirm that the addressee has any necessary permit.

Prohibited Items

In addition to items considered non-mailable matter, the following are prohibited:

  • animala
  • bullion and currency
  • absinthe and alcohol containing absinthe
  • contact lenses
  • credit cards
  • film, undeveloped
  • ivory
  • jewellery
  • knives
  • liquor
  • pharmaceuticals
  • pornography
  • x-rays.

Shipments to Burundi require two copies of the commercial invoice and bill of lading. If requested, two copies of the certificate of origin must also be presented.

Customs Procedures:

The majority of imports into Burundi require import licenses. These licenses are used for payment and statistical control purposes and are automatically granted. Applications for licenses must be submitted to the Central Bank through an authorized bank. Licenses are valid for four months.

Burundi requires that the Declaration of Intention of Import (DII) is carried out for all imports into the country.
