Import Restrictions

Senders should determine import restrictions from the country's authorities before posting:

• animal products
• bows, arrows, fencing foils or toys
• fish and crustaceans

• maize seeds
• ossein and bones treated with acid

Used clothing

Used clothing is admitted only if addressed to a genuine charitable organization.

Prohibited Items

In addition to items considered non-mailable matter, the following are prohibited:

• articles of ivory and other animal-based carving material
• agricultural and industrial chemicals
• bank notes, currency, travellers cheques
• counterfeit currency
• communistic materials
• hazardous wastes
• liquids
• maps
• matches in the manufacture of white phosphorous
• nuclear reactors
• powder
• pornographic materials
• spent fuel elements cartridges for nuclear reactors
• used tires for commercial vehicles
• viagra.

In addition, senders must label commercial goods INVOICE ENCLOSED, and enclose a dated and signed invoice.

It is essential to ensure compliance with Kenyan standards in the country of origin prior to shipping. The following documents may be required:

Import Declaration Form

An Import Declaration Form (IDF) must be applied for and obtained from the Kenya Revenue Authority for any Commercial Importation. The importer is responsible for applying for the IDF, but may consult an agent to do so. Once the IDF is passed, the importer may proceed to arrange inspection of the cargo and once completed, the cargo can be shipped. The IDF contains key information, such as: value of the cargo; quantity; quality; and classification (HS Code).

Certificate of Conformity

The Kenya Bureau of Standards has appointed certain agents (INTERTEK, SGS, Bureau Veritas) for enforcing the conformity inspection of commodities that require an inspection. These agents will issue to the shipper/supplier a Certificate of Conformity, as well as test results. It is important to plan ahead for obtaining a Certificate of Conformity, especially for time-critical shipments, as testing and issuing of the certificate can be a long process.

Commercial Invoice

The commercial invoice must be detailed (as pertaining packing list) and the total CIF value of the consignments must be indicated. It would be preferable to have the exact details reflected on the packing list copied onto the commercial invoice, as well as values indicated, and the total CIF value.

An import permit is required for certain health-related, environmental and safety products. Importing animals, plants and seeds are subject to quarantine regulations. As well, some pets require an import license.

NOTE: Items mailed using Xpresspost - International service require an additional copy of the commercial invoice/CN23.

Customs

To import into Kenya, an importer will have to enlist the services of a clearing agent who will process the import documentation through Kenya Customs electronically, and clear the goods on your behalf. Customs will assess duty payable depending on the value of the items and the duty rate applicable.
